Of all countries that conduct a census, I have learned that there are only two that officially use race as one of the categories to characterize the demography of their populations: South Africa and United States. All the other countries therefore do not use race as a category to describe their populations.
While the use of race as a demographic category is to be debated, the race is used in various statistics in a variety of ways in this country, particularly to demonstrate how racism is functioning. Taking a mortality rate for example, recent statistics indicate significant disparities between Caucasian and African American populations: meaning more of the former are surviving, while more of the latter are dying.
What struck me when I was studying epidemiology was the statistics, in which mortality rates of Bangladeshi men in Bangladeshi and African American men in Harlem were compared. So-called the survival analysis (to see how many people can survive to reach a certain age) of men in these two population groups indicates that "black men in Harlem were less likely to reach the age of 65 than men in Bangladesh." (see Excess Mortality in Harlem)
What is wrong with this country??
